Tooth removal in Wagga Wagga
We'll explain every step and check in with you after your procedure.
What is a dental extraction?
A dental extraction is the permanent removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone.
Why is a tooth removed?
Some teeth are removed because they are badly decayed, have advanced gum disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Others may need removal because they are poorly positioned (such as impacted teeth), are extra teeth, or need to be removed before orthodontic treatment.
Are some extractions more difficult than others?
Sometimes tooth removal is routine: the tooth is easy to see, can be held with forceps and comes out in one piece. Other teeth need more of a surgical procedure because they are under the gum or bone. They may need to be removed in pieces, and some of the surrounding bone may need to be removed as well.
What does it feel like?
The tooth, jawbone and gums around the area are numbed with a local anaesthetic. During the extraction you will feel pressure, from the tooth being firmly rocked to widen the socket. The nerves that carry pain are numbed, but the nerves that carry pressure are not really affected, so you feel pressure rather than pain.
In the dental chair or under general anaesthetic?
Everyone is different, so we offer the choice of treatment in the dental chair, or under general anaesthetic at the day surgery next door if that's what you'd prefer and it suits your case.
Am I on my own afterwards?
No. When you leave our rooms we keep in contact to make sure you're as comfortable as possible, and we're available when you need us.
