When should my child have their first orthodontic check?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children have an initial orthodontic consultation at around 7–8 years of age, so that developing problems with the teeth, jaws or bite can be identified before they fully develop. Many children won't need treatment yet. We'll monitor their growth and advise on the right time. See early orthodontic checks.

What is interceptive treatment?

In suitable cases, early (interceptive) treatment may help to create room for crowded, erupting teeth, guide jaw growth, reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth, preserve space for teeth that have not come through yet, and shorten later treatment with braces. Every child is different. Your orthodontist will explain whether treatment is needed now, later or not at all.

Braces and aligners for teens

Options include metal braces, a reliable, well-proven option for all ages; clear braces, ceramic brackets that are less noticeable and work the same way as metal braces; and Invisalign® and clear aligners, which are removable and worn 20–22 hours a day. Aligners suit many, but not all, cases.

How long does treatment take?

It varies from person to person. Many courses of treatment take between 12 months and 2–3 years. We'll give you an estimate for your child's case.

What happens at the first visit?

We examine the teeth and bite, take photos and X-rays where needed, and talk about your concerns. Then we explain the options, likely timeframe and costs in writing.

All orthodontic treatment has some risks, such as gum inflammation, decalcification and root shortening, and some teeth can move back after treatment, which is why retainers matter. Your orthodontist will explain the risks, likely timeframe and costs before you decide.
